"1984" by George Orwell

It may not have been the first dystopian novel, but it definitely set the bar higher than anything that came before it. Writing in 1949, Orwell looked 35 years into the future with prophetic, nightmarish vision. It has now been an additional 39 years and the power of the novel's admonitions just seem to grow, not lessen, the more time passes.
